Generative AI Policies

Generative AI & AI-Assisted Technologies Policy

Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies have been rapidly adopted in research, offering significant benefits while requiring clear standards for responsible and transparent use. Authors must declare the use of these tools in the manuscript preparation process upon submission.

Human Oversight is Mandatory

Authors may use AI tools to support manuscript preparation. However, these tools must never be used as a substitute for human critical thinking, expertise, and evaluation.

⚠️ Prohibition of AI Authorship

Authors must not list or cite AI tools as an author or co-author on the manuscript. Authorship implies responsibilities and tasks that can only be attributed to, and performed by, humans.

Author Accountability

Ultimately, authors are completely responsible for the contents of their work. This includes:

  • ✓
Verifying Accuracy: Carefully reviewing the accuracy, comprehensiveness, and impartiality of all AI-generated output (AI-generated references can be fabricated).
  • ✓
Ensuring Originality: Editing all material thoroughly to ensure it represents the author’s authentic contribution, analysis, insights, and ideas.
  • ✓
AI Images: Ensuring accuracy and originality of any AI-generated images and providing appropriate attribution.
  • ✓
Safeguarding Rights: Ensuring the manuscript safeguards data privacy, IP, and other rights by checking the T&C of the AI tools used.
  • ✓
Transparency: Disclosing the use of AI tools clearly to readers.

How to Declare AI Usage

The statement will appear in the published work and should be placed in a new section before the references list. (If you have nothing to disclose, you do not need to add a statement).

Example Template:

Title of new section: Declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the manuscript preparation process.

Statement: During the preparation of this work the author(s) used [NAME OF TOOL / SERVICE] in order to [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the published article.

Exemptions: The declaration does not apply to basic tools (grammar, spelling, references checkers) or specialist disability-related assistive technology used solely for accessibility purposes.
?Reviewer & Editor Policy: To protect authors’ rights and confidentiality, editors and reviewers must not upload an unpublished manuscript into a generative AI tool. They may only use AI to improve their own language in review reports or for literature searches.
